MDL supplies largest reel drive system to Oceaneering

Oceaneering International has taken delivery of an 800-metric ton (882-ton) safe working load reel drive system from Maritime Developments Ltd.

ABERDEEN, UKOceaneering International has taken delivery of an 800-metric ton (882-ton) safe working load (SWL) reel drive system (RDS) from Maritime Developments Ltd. (MDL).

The modular system will be used to deploy and retrieve SURF products on board the company’s newbuild multi-service vesselOcean Evolution and joins Oceaneering’s global fleet of flex-lay equipment.

The system, rated for more than 1,300-metric ton (1,433-ton) dynamic working load, the RDS can handle 14-m (46-ft) dia. reels weighing 800 metric tons under dynamic, sea-state conditions.

It can be configured to operate smaller and lighter loads for specific projects, and can also handle multiple reels, as well as skid fully-loaded reels up and down a dedicated track system with integrated reel cradle and support grillage.

MDL has also supplied a self-contained electric variable frequency drive package and an A60-rated fire-proof control cabin to conform to US coast guard requirements, and a walk-about-box for flexibility of operator position.

This is the largest reel drive system the company has delivered to date.
