Transocean secures $1B Equinor rig contracts offshore Norway, adds Shell drilling campaign

Transocean has secured approximately $1 billion in drilling contracts from Equinor for three harsh-environment semisubmersibles offshore Norway, while Shell has awarded a separate two-well contract to the Transocean Norge rig.

Why this news matters:

  • The awards add roughly $1 billion to Transocean’s backlog, reinforcing demand for harsh-environment drilling rigs in the Norwegian offshore market.

  • Equinor’s approval of three semisubmersible contracts signals continued investment in offshore exploration and development activity on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

  • Shell’s follow-on rig commitment suggests operators are seeking to secure available high-specification drilling capacity in a tight North Sea market.

Transocean has secured a two-well contract with A/S Norske Shell for the harsh environment semisub Transocean Norge.

The estimated 120-day program offshore Norway will likely begin in direct continuation of the rig's previously awarded programs. The $62-million contract terms include an option for a further well.

Late last month, Equinor issued final approval for a previously announced agreement for three harsh environment semis in Norway: Transocean Enabler, Transocean Encourage, and Transocean Endurance.

The total value to Transocean is about $1 billion.
