Eni starts gas production from Maha Field offshore Indonesia

Eni has started production at Indonesia’s Maha Field, a two-well subsea development tied back to the Jangkrik FPU.

Why this news matters:

  • The startup of the Maha Field highlights how operators can quickly bring new offshore gas supplies online by tying subsea developments into existing infrastructure, reaching first production 21 months after FID.

  • The project strengthens Indonesia's domestic gas supply and LNG export capacity while boosting output from the Jangkrik FPU and broader Kutei Basin development hub.

Eni has started gas production from the Maha Field in Indonesia's Kutei Basin offshore East Kalimantan, 21 months after reaching final investment decision (FID).

The field is located in the West Ganal Block in about 1,000 m of water and consists of two subsea production wells tied back to the existing Jangkrik FPU via about 12 km of flowlines.

Following processing onboard the Jangkrik FPU, gas will be transported through existing pipeline infrastructure to Indonesia's domestic market and the Bontang LNG plant, which serves both domestic and export customers.

The Maha Field is capable of producing 250 MMscf/d of gas, increasing combined output from the Jangkrik FPU and South Hub development to a plateau of 750 MMscf/d.

Eni said the planned 2028 startup of the Gendalo & Gendang project, which will also be tied back to the Jangkrik FPU, is expected to extend that production plateau beyond the end of the decade.

The field is operated by Searah, the upstream company created by Eni and PETRONAS. Eni described Maha as a key component of its South Hub development strategy and a step forward in monetizing Indonesia's offshore gas resources.
