Bouri offshore gas recovery project nears startup offshore Libya

Mellitah Oil & Gas has completed the offshore Bouri Gas Utilization Project, enabling recovery of previously flared associated gas for Libya's domestic power market while supporting exports to Italy via the Greenstream pipeline.

Why this news matters:

  • The project converts previously flared gas into a marketable resource, improving energy efficiency and reducing waste.

  • Recovered gas will support Libya's domestic power generation needs while providing additional export volumes to Europe through the Greenstream pipeline.

  • The development is expected to lower Libya's annual CO2 emissions by about 1.5 million metric tons, highlighting the role of gas-utilization projects in emissions reduction.

Mellitah Oil & Gas, the joint venture (JV) between Eni and Libya’s National Oil Corp. (NOC), has completed the Bouri Gas Utilization Project in the Libyan sector of the Mediterranean Sea.

The startup process is now underway for recovery and treatment of associated gas produced from the Bouri Field in Libya’s western offshore area. This was previously flared.

Development activity involved construction and installation of the new Bouri associated gas recovery module, which will capture about 100 Bcf/d, and various upgrades to equipment and pipeline infrastructure and related tie-ins.

Recovered gas—estimated at about 700 MMscm/year—will help satisfy demand for power generation in Libya’s domestic market.

Further gas volumes will be reserved for export north through the Greenstream pipeline to southern Italy. In addition, the project should reduce Libya’s CO2 emissions by about 1.5 MMtonnes annually.

Work continues on the JV’s A&E Structures Project, designed to bring onstream new offshore gas resources for the domestic market and export.
