HOUSTON Saipem has won a 2024 Spotlight on New Technology Award at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) for its Integrate Acoustic Unit (I.A.U.).

This technology provides non-intrusive digital monitoring of subsea pipelines during laying operations.

According to the company, the system provides greater accuracy in remote detection of obstructions, pipe deformations, accidental water ingress and other obstacles. It is also said to remove the risks associated with the mechanical detector that is commonly deployed during pipelay.

In addition, I.A.U. can store all measurements taken and exchange them with the lay vessel’s data acquisition system, supporting digitalization of information concerning laying operations.

DNV has awarded the development a Statement of Technology Qualification following testing on Saipem's vessels and the system is supporting current offshore projects.

Saipem previously received the Spotlight on New Technology Award for its FlatFish underwater inspection drone (2023), the Hydrone-R underwater intervention drone (2021), and its Offset Installation Equipment technology (2019) for remotely capping oil well spills.
