Aker Solutions continues to build its backlog across both oil and gas and renewable energy markets, securing a new engineering assignment for QatarEnergy's Maydan Mahzam offshore redevelopment while advancing offshore wind planning efforts in eastern Canada.
The projects were announced just prior to the company's latest financial update.
Qatar upgrades mature offshore producer
PTSC M&C in Vietnam has issued a letter of award to Aker Solutions to perform detailed design for QatarEnergy’s redevelopment of the Maydan Mahzam oil field offshore Qatar.
Maydan Mahzam, one of Qatar's longest-producing offshore oil fields, is in 40 m water depth, 100 km northeast of the Qatari coast 28 km southeast of Halul Island. It was discovered in the 1960s along with the nearby Bul Hanine Field, and it has been in production since 1965.
QatarEnergy now plans major upgrades to extend the field’s operational life, Aker Solutions said.
Aker Solutions will provide detail design services for offshore installations including three large topsides, four jackets and brownfield tie-ins.
Earlier this year, QatarEnergy awarded McDermott a decommissioning definition engineering contract for Qatar's first offshore decommissioning campaign. McDermott will devise a technical and commercial framework and perform techno-economic studies concerning the safe and systematic retirement and removal of 27 offshore platforms. The remit extends to all associated subsea infrastructure, including subsea cables and pipelines, at the Al-Karkara, Idd El Shargi and Maydan Mahzam fields.
Offshore wind planning advances in Atlantic Canada
Net Zero Atlantic has contracted Aler Solutions' consultancy division Entr to conduct an offshore wind transmission routing and technology study in eastern Canada as part of the Atlantic Canada Offshore Wind Readiness Program.
Entr will collaborate with Canada-based C-CORE, a provider of risk-based advisory services for harsh marine environments, to assess planning-level offshore transmission routing options and technology configurations for future offshore wind developments.
The results will help inform offshore wind development in Nova Scotia and evaluation of potential electricity exports from Canada to US markets.
Entr is leading the study from Aker Solutions’ St. John's office in Newfoundland, with support from group teams in Oslo. The work should be completed in January, with the findings to be made publicly available.
