PERTH, Australia – Eni Australia looks set to initiate well P&A operations next year at the Woollybutt oil field in the WA-25-L production license off the northwest coast of Western Australia.

The field, discovered in 1997 in 100 m (328 ft) water depth, 80 km (50 mi) north of Onslow, underwent development in 2003 via subsea wells producing to an FPSO.

Production ceased, and the partners are currently working on the decommissioning program.

According to one of them – Tap Oil – Eni has revised its estimates for the abandonment activities, with subsea equipment removal costs set to come down based on indications from third-party contractors. However, the well P&A cost estimate has risen.

Subsea equipment retrieval and seabed restoration is scheduled for 2020.
