STAVANGER, Norway – Interwell has installed and retrieved its expandable junk catcher add-on (EJCA) in various wells in a Norwegian offshore field.
The deployment, claimed to have brought cost and time savings for operator Statoil, was part of a campaign to remove and replace old christmas trees.
During this type of intervention, Interwell explained, scale can present challenges in setting and retrieving barrier plugs. Conventionally, separate junk baskets are run on top of the plug to catch falling debris.
These baskets must be set and retrieved by additional runs, which is time-consuming and can lead to scale being scraped from the tubing wall and pushed on top of the plug when running in hole.
Cleaning the top of the plug from debris can take days. However, the EJCA, Interwell said, requires only one run to install and retrieve, cutting Statoil’s intervention operational time by about 24 hours.
