GALVESTON, Texas – Bell Technologies LLC has introduced its newest measurement device, the VTD densitometer, on the exhibition floor of the Topsides, Platforms & Hulls Conference and Exhibition held at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston, Texas, from Feb. 3-5, 2015.

The stand-alone densitometer operates on the resonance principle. The company says that its unique design allows for a compact, relatively lightweight product that gives customers great installation flexibility. When the densitometer is combined with Bell Technologies’ Torus Wedge, the result is a mass flow metering system.

Given the high cost of drilling mud (approximately 10% of a well’s overall cost), rig operators can now accurately measure their mud usage and density, aiding in cost accountability and tailoring the drilling process to the formation. Having data presented in real-time gives engineers an important tool to modify mud components as the formation pressure varies.

Drilling mud measurement is one of the harshest environments in all of density measurement. Bell Technologies says that both oil and water-based mud are compatible with whichever meter design the client chooses.
