TotalEnergies forms next-phase AI partnership

AI specialist Mistral AI will help TotalEnergies speed up adoption of artificial intelligence applications.

TotalEnergies has entered a collaboration with generative artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Mistral AI.

The Paris-based company will help TotalEnergies speed up adoption of AI innovations.

The partners plan to establish a joint innovation laboratory, staffed by personnel from both organizations, to test/design new digital solutions. TotalEnergies’ initial goals include using these to:

  • Design an assistant for its 1,000 researchers to help them develop new energies and further reduce the company's CO2 emissions and environmental footprint generally;
  • Devise decision-support solutions to enhance performance of its industrial assets and lower their CO2 emissions.

In addition, the laboratory will test digital solutions for other use cases, notably production of renewable energy production. And in light of the emerging issue of digital sovereignty in Europe, the partnership will examine opportunities for TotalEnergies to adopt AI infrastructure.

Initially, the French major deployed AI mainly in earth sciences, to improve predictive maintenance or to detect potential issues with machinery at its facilities. But the technology is becoming increasingly important to its operations.

TotalEnergies’ Digital Factory, now in its fifth year of operation, brings together 300 developers, data scientists and other digital specialists. Collectively they have developed 60 solutions that involve use of technologies ranging from machine learning to generative AI.
