Golar LNG assessing multiple designs for future FLNG vessels
Golar LNG is looking to expand its global fleet of FLNG vessels.
In an Aug. 14 results update, the company noted growing industry recognition of the benefits of FLNGs for supplying gas to local markets, compared with land-based liquefaction terminals.
Demand is increasing as a way of monetizing stranded, associated and flared or re-injected offshore gas resources.
Golar, which claims to be the sole provider of FLNG as a service, now plans to order another suitable vessel before negotiating a charter to provide competitive terms for its next FLNG project.
The company is collaborating with three prospective shipyards for different FLNG designs (MKI, MKII and MKIII), which would have liquefaction capacities ranging from 2 MM to 5.4 MM t/year.
It also aims to secure slot reservations for long-lead equipment during the current quarter.
A fifth FLNG order could follow soon after the fourth unit has been ordered and chartered.
The company currently has two FLNGs in operation:
- One unit offshore Mauritania/Senegal for bp; and
- Hilli Episeyo on charter offshore Cameroon.
The latter will be redeployed in 2027 in the Gulf of San Matias, Argentina, under a recently agreed 20-year charter for Southern Energy S.A. (SESA).
