Seatrium and Karpowership collaborate on new floating power plants and LNG carrier conversions
Seatrium has signed a letter of intent with Karpowership to partner on four new generation powerships (i.e., floating power plants)—with options for two more, according to an Aug. 14 Seatrium news release.
Seatrium will carry out the integration of the four powerships, and Karpowership will deliver the hulls and key equipment for the powerships to Seatrium Singapore, where integration works will begin in first-quarter 2027. Seatrium’s scope of work includes mechanical and electrical, equipment integration, mechanical completion, and pre-commissioning.
The agreement also includes the conversion, life extension and repairs of three LNG carriers into FSRUs. This involves the installation of regasification modules, spread-mooring systems and the integration of critical supporting systems such as cargo handling, offloading, utility, electrical and automation systems.
About a month ago, Seatrium reported that it was awarded an FSRU conversion contract from Kinetics, as part of an energy transition initiative by Karpowership. This news followed Kinetics' confirmation of a seventh FSRU conversion project. At the time, it said the project was scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year, and it involves the conversion of an LNG carrier into the FSRU named LNGT Turkiye.
