Excelerate to provide Germany’s fifth FSRU

The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection has selected a consortium between Tree Energy Solutions, E.ON and ENGIE to develop and implement Germany’s fifth FSRU.

The Wilhelmshaven terminal layout will comprise six ship berths, 2 MMcm of onshore storage capacity using 10 onsite tanks, of which six will be available during the initial stage.

BERLIN, Germany — The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) has selected a consortium between Tree Energy Solutions (TES), E.ON and ENGIE to develop and implement Germany’s fifth floating storage regasification unit (FSRU).

This will have an annual import capacity of about 5 Bcm, equivalent to 5% of the country’s annual gas consumption. ENGIE is responsible for chartering the FSRU on behalf of the BMWK, for part of its LNG supply, and is collaborating with TES on the development and operation of the FSRU.

Excelerate Energy will provide the vessel under a five-year charter, and it will be stationed at a terminal at the port of Wilhelmshaven, northern Germany, where TES is building a Green Energy Hub.

This will convert large volumes of renewable electrons from sunny and windy locations into green hydrogen and renewable gas.

The company and E.ON have signed a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership for the development, with the terminal importing LNG from TES’ upstream projects.

The TES terminal's structure will ultimately include direct access to natural gas, hydrogen and CO₂ pipeline networks required for Germany’s decarbonization programs.
