ABS issues AiP for Hanwha FPSO cybersecurity solution

ABS has issued approval in principle (AiP) to Hanwha Ocean for a new cybersecurity arrangement to protect infrastructure on FPSOs.

Hanwha Ocean and SIGA Data Security jointly developed the Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity solution to safeguard OT systems from cyber threats. ABS undertook design reviews based on class and statutory requirements.

The new solution is part of a multi-year offshore technology collaboration between ABS and Hanwha Ocean concerning various projects, drawing on their respective core competencies.

Main themes under investigation are sustainability, digitalization, artificial intelligence and OT cybersecurity.

Philippe Levy, president of Hanwha Ocean, said the partnership “enables us to offer validated, leading-edge cybersecurity solutions that provide enhanced process-level visibility, real-time threat detection and effective remote operational oversight, all fully aligned with stringent offshore industry compliance standards and segmentation architectures."

He added. “This milestone significantly strengthens Hanwha Ocean’s competitive positioning in current and upcoming FPSO bids, where robust cybersecurity measures are essential.”

FSIUs as a decarbonization solution

In a separate development, ABS has published a new technical paper that assesses in-depth the emerging offshore technologies supporting carbon capture and storage (CCS) developments.

ABS has analyzed the shift to dedicated CO₂ injection and storage facilities from existing enhanced oil recovery processes, in which CO₂ is injected into a reduced pressurized oil reservoir to recover residual remaining oil.

Its analysis suggests that floating storage and injection units (FSIUs) show promise as a means for processing and transferring CO₂ for permanent storage in empty wells offshore.

The FSIU could operate both as an injection facility and as a floating CO₂ storage and processing terminal prior to injection.
