Petrobras selects Strohm composite pipe technology for offshore Brazil post-salt fields

Petrobras has contracted Strohm to supply thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) for water injection and gas lift operations in its offshore Brazil post-salt fields, with offshore trials planned in water depths of up to 1,500 m.

Petrobras has contracted Strohm to supply thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) for its Brazilian offshore post-salt cluster fields.

The terms include qualification testing, project engineering, field services and support for offshore trials and installation.

Petrobras has been evaluating technologies that can help reduce installation complexity and life-cycle costs across its expanding offshore Brazil portfolio.

The pipe will be used for water injection and gas lift in water depths of up to 1,500 m, with the TCP to be monitored under operating conditions, including handling and installation from pipelay vessels from Petrobras’ fleet.

Successful deployment could further validate TCP technology for deepwater offshore applications.

According to Strohm, its TCP products, manufactured from a fiber (carbon or glass) and a polymer (polyethylene or polyamide), are lighter and simpler to handle than flexible or rigid pipe solutions.

The spoolable pipelines are designed to carry no associated maintenance costs, while accommodating ongoing pipeline integrity inspection.

Why operators are evaluating TCP:

TCP is gaining attention in offshore developments because it is lighter than conventional steel pipe, resistant to corrosion and can be supplied in continuous lengths that simplify installation. Operators are increasingly evaluating the technology for subsea production, injection and gas transport applications.
