SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy – An explosion on the pipelay vessel Israfil Huseynov earlier this month led to 14 Saipem employees being taken to the hospital.

The company was operating the vessel in Azeri waters in the Caspian Sea for the Shah Deniz II project.

Maintenance operations on an item of equipment during pipelay were the cause of the incident, the company added.

Saipem has also announced two new offshore drilling contracts with a total value of more than $100 million.

One, awarded by Repsol Norge, involves drilling of a single well offshore Norway this summer, using the harsh environment semi Scarabeo 8.

The other contract was a three-year award in the Middle East, to be performed by a high-spec jackup.
