Fugro to survey North Sea cable routes for hazards ahead of 4-GW LanWin grid projects

The work includes extensive seabed investigations, target identification and potential UXO disposal to prepare future HVDC export cable routes connecting offshore wind capacity to Germany's power grid.

Why this news matters:

  • The surveys will help mitigate safety and installation risks before construction begins on critical offshore transmission infrastructure supporting Germany's energy transition.

  • LanWin3 and LanWin6 will provide a combined 4 GW of transmission capacity, making the projects important enablers of future North Sea offshore wind development.

  • The work highlights the growing role of seabed characterization, UXO management and marine geophysics in large-scale offshore wind and power transmission projects.

Fugro will deploy two of its fixed magnetic gradiometer array Geowing systems, each equipped with 10 magnetic sensors to detect potential UXO and other objects on or under the seafloor.

The survey will generate geo-data for mapping potential targets and devising a master target list for further investigation.

Further inspection and identification activities will follow in 2028, using ROV technology and other detection systems to investigate selected targets and remove debris where needed.

In addition, Fugro will support removal and disposal of any confirmed UXO in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Ronny Bøhn, director of Marine Geophysics for Europe and Africa, said:

“On a project of this scale, the challenge is that the number and nature of potential UXO can only be known once the survey is complete.

Building a reliable picture of the seabed at an early stage will allow 50Hertz to plan the next steps with greater certainty and manage safety throughout the cable installation program.”
