Denmark awards Vattenfall contracts for 1.8-GW offshore wind projects

Vattenfall has secured development rights for two Danish offshore wind projects totaling 1.8 GW, with construction targeted for completion by 2032.

Vattenfall has secured development rights for two major offshore wind projects in Denmark that could deliver a combined 1.8 GW of capacity, strengthening the company's position in one of Europe's most established offshore wind markets.

Vattenfall Vindkraft Offshore Wind DK secured rights to the North Sea I Mid Offshore Wind Project, 20 km offshore the coast of western Jutland near Hvide Sande, with a minimum capacity of 1,000 MW.

Hesselø, the other project, is 30 km south of the island of the same name in the Kattegat Sea between Denmark and Sweden, with a minimum installed capacity of 800 MW. This was offered to Vattenfall Vindkraft A/S on behalf of a company that has yet to be established.

In both cases, a grid connection has been reserved, with the connection point 50 km inland. The consents will run for 30 years, with an option to extend by a further 10 years.

Together, the projects represent one of Denmark's largest recent offshore wind awards and form part of the country's broader effort to expand renewable electricity generation and support electrification goals.

Construction of the two wind farms should be completed by 2032.

These awards follow the Danish Energy Agency's (DEA) submission of tenders last November for three offshore wind farms. The third of these, North Sea South (at least 1 GW), has a bid deadline of October 2028.
