SINGAPORE Sembcorp Marine has completed construction of two substations for Ørsted’s Hornsea Two offshore wind farm in the UK North Sea.

The offshore substation (OSS) and reactive compensation station (RCS) were constructed at the company’s integrated facilities. According to Sembcorp, this is the largest AC OSS. They have a combined weight of 10,200 metric tons (11,244 tons).

In addition to fabrication, Sembcorp led the engineering, procurement, hook-up, and commissioning works for the substations.

Located some 89 km (55 mi) off the Yorkshire coast, Hornsea Two spans an area of 462 sq km (178 sq mi) and will be the world’s largest wind farm when it goes into operation in 2022. The 1.4-GW offshore wind farm is expected to provide power to more than 1.3 million homes in the UK.

The substations are expected to reach their destination at the end of September for integration with their jackets. Sembcorp delivered the OSS and RCS jackets in August 2020, and Heerema’s crane vessel Sleipnir installed them in October 2020.
