bp, TechnipFMC advance 20K subsea technology collaboration in Gulf of Mexico

TechnipFMC and bp have agreed to collaborate on the potential deployment of 20,000-psi subsea production systems for bp's Paleogene developments, aiming to improve project predictability, schedule certainty and future technology advancement.

Why this news matters:

  • The agreement supports wider adoption of 20K subsea technology for next-generation high-pressure deepwater developments.

  • Early collaboration between operator and supplier could help reduce project risk and improve schedule certainty.

  • The MoU signals continued industry investment in advanced subsea systems for emerging US Gulf resources.

TechnipFMC and bp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the potential supply of 20,000-psi (20K) subsea production systems for bp's Paleogene developments in the Gulf of Mexico.

The agreement establishes a framework for the companies to identify early project opportunities and advance future 20K technology development, with the goal of improving schedule certainty and project execution. TechnipFMC said the collaboration supports wider deployment of standardized 20K subsea solutions, leveraging proven technologies and repeatable project delivery methods to enhance predictability across future deepwater developments.

Twenty-thousand psi subsea equipment is designed for ultrahigh-pressure reservoirs and is regarded as a key enabling technology for developing some of the Gulf's deepest and most technically challenging Paleogene resources.

bp is advancing several Paleogene projects in the Gulf, including Kaskida, one of the first developments expected to utilize 20K equipment. Paleogene reservoirs are estimated to contain billions of barrels of recoverable resources, making them one of the region's most significant long-term growth opportunities.

The offshore industry has spent more than a decade developing and qualifying 20K technologies aimed at unlocking high-pressure deepwater resources that were previously difficult or uneconomic to develop.
