HOUSTON  Maritime Developments Ltd (MDL) and Jumbo Maritime have completed a polyester mooring rope installation for a new floating production unit (FPU) in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in a water depth of 1,200 m (4,000 ft).

An MDL mooring spread, mobilized onboard Jumbo’s Fairplayer, comprises a Generation 1 reel drive system and level winder for transpooling of mooring line ropes from 24 transport reels onto a heavy-duty deployment reel and a Generation 2 reel drive system for the overside installation of the product.

The polyester rope transport reels were placed in two parallel bays, allowing for 15 reels to be handled on the top deck, and the other nine from the middle deck. The 8.6-m OD installation reel featured a spoked section to separate the polyester rope and mooring chain.

MDL also designed a skid frame to allow the HPU to skid with the Generation 1 RDS down the tracks.

This was the two companies’ first joint installation in the GoM, following mooring collaborations in the Mediterranean and offshore Brazil during 2020 and 2021.
