ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands  Shell Nederland and Shell Overseas Investments have committed to the Holland Hydrogen I development in the port of Rotterdam.

This should start operating in 2025 and will be Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant, Shell said.

The 200-MW electrolyzer, powered by the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord), which is part-owned by Shell, will be located on the Tweede Maasvlakte, producing up to 60,000 kg/d of renewable hydrogen.

Production will head through the HyTransPort pipeline to supply the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park, where it will replace some of the gray hydrogen used at the refinery.

This should partly decarbonize the facility’s production of petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
