ADIPEC 2026: ADNOC broadens AI capability

Collaboration with OpenAI, G42 will initially focus on integrated field planning, maximizing reserves.

ADNOC has formed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42.

The state-owned entity claims to be the first energy company to deploy OpenAI’s advanced artificial intelligence platform for connecting and coordinating frontier AI agents across “complex business operations.”

ADNOC’s existing AI tools, including ENERGYai, deliver insights into its reservoirs, assets and operations. OpenAI Frontier will connect that intelligence across the business, enabling coordinated, as opposed to sequential, operational, capital and commercial decisions.

The initial focus will be on two applications. Firstly, converting field master planning from separate subsurface, facilities and economic studies into a single, integrated decision.

OpenAI’s reasoning models, using ENERGYai’s reservoir-level intelligence, will integrate decades of data compiled on thousands of wells, multiple stacked reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities together with capital, cost and commercial considerations.

Results will support preparation and optimization of full-field development master plans at unprecedented speed, scale and depth, ADNOC claims. And instead of optimizing each reservoir or facility individually, the plan is optimized for the whole field simultaneously.

With the second application, ADNOC will use the technology to value every barrel still in the ground. The service will connect intelligence across the company’s value chain, from production and processing through refining, logistics, sales and trading.

Interconnected AI agents will address complex workflows from the reservoirs to customers, providing insights that decision-makers insights can act on to maximise the value of each barrel ADNOC produces, processes and sells, the company added.

The partners will also develop a decision intelligence capability using OpenAI Frontier, combining OpenAI’s latest frontier models with ADNOC's proprietary industrial data, for deployment on G42’s sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE. However, human specialists will retain oversight of consequential decisions.

Another objective is to fortify ADNOC’s cyber defence capability via OpenAI's Daybreak Blue initiative, helping security teams identify vulnerabilities and safeguard critical energy infrastructure.

Finally, the partnership will jointly develop further AI solutions and instruct ADNOC's workforce on how best to use them.

In an unrelated development, Plexus Holdings’ HG-R wellhead integrity system has achieved qualification with ADNOC.

This is a retrofit wellhead spool based on Plexus’ POS-GRIP and HG sealing technology. It is designed to address tubing hanger neck seal integrity issues in producing wells via a new metal-to-metal sealing solution, with no need to recover the tubing hanger.
