Iran identifies possible new Caspian gas giant

Khazar Oil Co. is reported to have discovered a potentially large gas field in the Iranian sector of the Caspian Sea.

TEHRAN, Iran – Khazar Oil Co. is reported to have discovered a potentially large gas field in the Iranian sector of the Caspian Sea.

According to Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Rostam Qasemi, in comments quoted by Iranian news service Shana, the discovery came in 700 m (2,296 ft) water depth and at 2,400 m (7,874 ft) subsurface.

Previously, Iran’s Caspian gas reserves were estimated at 11 tcf.

Qasemi added that preparatory work involved in this find was more complex than for Iran’s other gas discoveries in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea.
