PARIS, France – The government of Guinea-Conakry is finalizing terms for a 22-block offshore and onshore licensing round.

In 2021 the government established SONAP through the merger of ONAP and the National Petroleum Import Company to integrate the company’s upstream and downstream sectors.

Five exploratory wells have been drilled in the country to date, with HyerDynamics and TotalEnergies both said to have been assessing the deep and ultra-deep water potential.

Under Guinea’s Natural Resources Charter Precept 3, renewed exploration is a priority, with a process under way to improve geological understanding of the offshore.

SONAP established the country’s first seismic data visualization center last June in partnership with SLB, TGS and PGS. It provides direct access to all acquired 2D/3D seismic and should help SONAP bring in funds for future exploration initiatives.

At present Guinea-Conakry has 15,000 sq km of 3D seismic and 45,000 km of 2D seismic.

SONAP has ambitions to acquire extensive 3D seismic coverage offshore and gravity/magnetic surveys onshore, using the data to help identify potential leads and attract new E&P companies.

The IAE forum in Paris this May will highlight the investment opportunities.
