WOKING, UK – Impact Oil & Gas has completed a farm-in transaction with Silver Wave Energy, gaining a 90% operated interest in Area 2 offshore South Africa.

Exploration Right reference 12/3/276 (Gamtoos, Algoa and Transkei basins) covers an area of around 78,708 sq km (30,389 sq mi) offshore eastern South Africa in water depths out to 4,500 m (14,764 ft), with the prospective areas within 3,500 m (11,483 ft).

The license was initially awarded to Silver Wave in 2015: the company has retained a 10% interest.

The South African government has approved the transfer.

Area 2 is within the Southern African Aptian deepwater oil and gas play, which extends from northern Namibia, around Cape Agulhas and the Natal Trough, to the Durban basin.

Total and its partners opened the play with their deepwater Brulpadda and Luiperd discoveries in the Outeniqua basin. Total will further test the play later this year with the Venus-1X well in ultra-deepwater off Namibia (Impact is a partner).

Philip Birch, Impact’s exploration director, said: “When added to Impact’s Transkei & Algoa license, [Area 2] captures the full length of all the large deep marine fans in the Natal Trough, which Impact believes to be a potential super-basin.

“This combined position offers substantial running room, with multiple play types underlain by very thick and oil-mature Cretaceous source rocks.”
