STOCKHOLM, Sweden – CNOOC has contracted Trelleborg’s offshore operation to supply 18 km (11 mi) of Tri-Strakes (vortex induced vibration strakes) for the risers and flowlines on the Lingshui 17-2 gas development off China.

Tri-Strakes are a riser and pipeline ancillary in free spans, where current cross flows can cause vortex induced vibration (VIV), in turn causing fatigue failure of the pipeline or its connections. The strakes will protect the pipelines from future VIV failure and prolong their lifespan.

The strakes will be placed on various sizes of pipelines attached to semisubmersible floating platforms and are suitable for both J-Lay and S-Lay scenarios.

The product will be manufactured in Skelmersdale, England.

Lingshui 17-2 is a deepwater gas field development in the South China Sea in water depths of 1,500 m (4,921 ft) about 150 km (93 mi) from Hainan Island.
