The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has issued a six-year exploration permit to a consortium of TotalEnergies, Mitsui and Nordsøfonden for potential storage of CO2 beneath the North Sea.

The location covers the subsurface in the coastal area of Inez, about 50 km from the coast of Thyboron.

It follows a tender round for three delimited areas offshore the coast of northern Jutland in western Denmark: Inez, Lisa and Jammerbugt.

The DEA said it has now granted four offshore permits for exploration of CO2 storage in Denmark.

TotalEnergies and its partners will initially perform studies to determine whether the Inez area is suitable for safe and environmentally sound storage of CO2. If their findings support this scenario, they will be allowed to proceed with a storage project.

Last month, the agency approved the first full-scale CO2 storage facility in the depleted Nini West Field in the Danish North Sea, for INEOS and its partners.
