OSLO -- StatoilHydro has hit gas pay with wildcat well 6705/10-1 in the Norwegian Sea. The well proved gas in the Upper Cretaceous. A preliminary estimate of the size of the discovery is 16 bcm of recoverable gas, the company says.
The semisubmersibleTransocean Leader drilled the well to a vertical depth of 3,775 m (12,385 ft) below the sea surface, and the well was concluded in the Upper Cretaceous. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
The well was not formation-tested, but the company carried out extensive data collection and sampling. The licensees will evaluate the result to clarify the resource potential and to consider potential development of the gas discovery, the company says.
