SUBIACO, AustraliaWestern Gas has received approval from Australian regulatory authority NOPSEMA for its environmental plan for the Sasanof-1 exploration well off Western Australia.

The semisubmersible Valaris MS-1 should start drilling on the WA-519-P permit in March/April 2022, after it has relocated from nearby activities on the North West Shelf.

Western Gas’ location for the well is 207 km (129 mu) northwest of Onslow. The well will be drilled vertically to a TD of around 2,500 m (8,202 ft) in 1,070 m (3,510 ft) water depth.

Sasanof is said to be on trend with and updip of the liquids rich, Mentorc gas-condensate field and the nearby Scarborough and Io-Jansz gas fields in the Carnarvon basin. Consultant ERC Equipoise estimates 2U prospective resources of 7.2 tcf of gas and 176 MMbbl of condensate, with a 32% chance of success.
