Maersk drillship prepares for record depth well offshore Angola

TotalEnergies E&P Angola has exercised an option for the drillship Maersk Voyager to drill the Ondjaba-1 exploration well in block 48.

LYNGBY, Denmark – TotalEnergies E&P Angola has exercised an option for the drillship Maersk Voyager to drill the Ondjaba-1 exploration well in block 48 offshore Angola.

The extension, estimated at 54 days, will keep the rig on contract until February 2022.

According to the vessel’s owner Maersk Drilling, the water depth of 3,628 m (11,903 ft) for Ondjaba-1 will establish a new world record.

Sister drillship Maersk Venturer set the previous benchmark, 3,400 m (11,155 ft), when it drilled the Raya-1 well for TotalEnergies offshore Uruguay in 2016.

After completing drilling operations, the Maersk Voyager will mobilize to Namibian waters to drill the Venus exploration well for TotalEnergies.

The contract includes an option for a further well.
