STAVANGER, NorwayEquinor has discovered oil close to the Visund field in the Norwegian North Sea.

The semisubmersible West Hercules drilled wells 34/6-5 S and 34/6-5 ST2 on the Garantiana West prospect in 285 m (935 ft) of water in license 554, 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of the Visund field, and 120 km (74.6 mi) west of Florø.

Equinor assesses recoverable resources in the range 8-23 MMboe.

This was the company’s fifth discovery offshore Norway of 2021, continuing its policy of proving fresh reserves close to existing infrastructure.

Well 34/6-5 S encountered a total oil column of 86 m (282 ft) in the early Jurassic Cook formation, with a 60-m (197-ft) medium-good quality sandstone reservoir.

Formation testing revealed stable flowing pressure and low pressure drop, along with consistent pressure build-up.

Equinor and partners Vår Energi and Aker BP will consider tying the discovery into the Garantiana field development.

The second well, 34/6-5 ST2, also underwent a formation test. Both wells have been P&A’d.

The West Hercules will next drill pilot holes in production licenses PL272 and 035 in the North Sea, close to the Krafla and Askja discoveries.
