OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) is looking into an incident that occurred on the drill floor of the semisubmersible West Bollsta last Saturday.

The rig, operated by Seadrill Europe Management, is under contract to Lundin Norway in the Barents Sea, and had received an acknowledgement of compliance from the PSA earlier this month.

A section of riser – reportedly 22.9 m (75 ft) long and weighing 26.5 metric tons (29.2 tons) – was being lifted from a horizontal position to the vertical by means of hydraulic handling equipment.

It had almost reached a vertical position when it became detached from the handling equipment, skidded and fell to the drill floor. The area was cordoned off, and no injuries resulted.

The PSA will seek to clarify the course of events and the scope of the incident; assess the actual and potential consequences; identify direct and underlying causes, and any nonconformities and improvement points related to the regulations.
