HOUSTON -- Charles A. Meloy, senior vice president of Gulf of Mexico and international operations for Anadarko gave the keynote address at the opening session for the Deep Offshore Technology conference Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Meloy commented on the opportunities and obstacles faced by the oil and gas industry, noting, "We have incredible opportunity ahead of us, but we also face some serious challenges."

One of the biggest exploration challenges, Meloy said, is that most of the unexplored and under-explored basins of the world are under thousands of feet of water.

Despite this obstacle, Meloy is optimistic that the industry is equal to the challenges ahead. "It took visionary thinking to break through previous 'truths' about what could and could not be done," he said.

Meloy credited the people of the oil and gas industry for the progress to date, saying that it was brilliant minds that have given the industry the "amazing structures and incredible technology" that allow the deepwater exploration and production that is ongoing today.

Meloy predicted great potential yet to be discovered in deepwater and voiced optimism about the industry's ability to recover the yet-to-be-discovered reserves.

"There is a lot left to be done and no shortage of opportunities," Meloy said.
