MELBOURNE, Australia – FAR says technical work continues on its exploration licenses offshore The Gambia after the government agreed to a six-month extension.

This followed the unsuccessful wildcat well on the deepwater Samo prospect late in 2018. FAR and partner Petronas requested the extension to give them time to assess the results.

In its latest results statement, FAR said theSamo-1 well had a pre-drill chance of success at around 50%, but drilling showed that at this location the seal over the structure was not adequately developed. So, although the well encountered oil shows, it was apparent that the structure could not retain significant oil.

The partners may decide to drill another well early next year, with evidence suggesting thedeepwater SNE oilfield off Senegal to the north may extend into The Gambia. The target could be the Soloo prospect.
