NEWCASTLE, Australia – Talon Petroleum Ltd. has agreed to acquire a 10% interest from Corallian Energy in license P2396 in the UK central North Sea, subject to approval from the Oil & Gas Authority.

The license, in the Central Graben area, includes Shell’s 1977 Tertiary Curlew‐A discovery which holds estimated 2C resources of 45 MMboe. Shell relinquished the permit in 2016 when the oil price was still low but had planned appraisal drilling.

Corallian, which secured the concession under the UK’s 30th Seaward Licensing Round, aims to start appraisal drilling next summer.

According to Talon, Curlew‐A is one of the few remaining undeveloped, sizeable and simple four‐way dip closed oil-bearing structures in this area. The discovery well encountered net oil sands of 10.5 m (34.5 ft) and recovered multiple 36° API oil samples.

Appraisal drilling will also be designed to test a secondary objective in the Forties sandstone, which was not encountered in the original discovery well, but which was present in nearby wells.

Talon sees this as the first step of a concentrated UK North Sea new ventures campaign, with a focus on drilling known or low‐risk, low‐cost opportunities with potential for tiebacks to nearby infrastructure.
