DALLAS – Kosmos Energy is to P&A its Pontoenoe-1 exploration well offshore Suriname after failing to find commercial hydrocarbons.
The well was designed to test late Cretaceous reservoirs in a stratigraphic trap charged from oil-mature Albian and Cenomanian-Turonian source kitchens, at a location 280 km (174 mi) northwest of Paramaribo in 2,497 m (8,192 ft) water depth.
Although the well encountered good-quality reservoir, the main exploration objective was water bearing. Kosmos believes there was evidence of a working source kitchen, but this test failed due to a lack of trap.
Andrew G. Inglis, the company’s chairman and CEO, said: “We are in the early stages of exploring the emerging Suriname-Guyana basin, and given the indications of a mature source, quality cretaceous reservoir, and the independent nature of the prospectivity we believe there is significant remaining potential in block 42. Our current plan is to test the next prospect in 2020.”
Kosmos’ partners in the block 42 contract area are Hess and Chevron.
