LONDON – Lloyd’s Register (LR) is providing support services for Eni’s Coral South field development in Area 4 of the Rovuma basin offshore Mozambique.

The floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit will beAfrica’s first floating gas facility and the world’s first ultra-deepwater FLNG, operating in a water depth of 2,000 m (6,562 ft).

It is designed to produce around 3.4 MM metric tons/yr (3.74 MM tons) of LNG. The vessel, 430 m (1,411 ft) long and 66 m (216 ft) wide, will weigh around 210,000 tons, and should operate for 25 years.

LR has been involved in the project since 2014, and in 2015 awarded a first Approval in Principle for the design.

Its main role is to ensure that the FLNG operates safely, does not impact the environment, that people working onboard are safe, and that the vessel is designed, procured and fabricated in compliance with recognized industry standards.

LR says that by dedicating a global team, it will help ensure a common approach globally for the design, engineering, operational and business development support.

Currently the project is in the detailed engineering design phase, mostly conducted in South Korea, France, and Japan. LR will deliver design appraisal documents as part of this phase, and will also certify all the topsides equipment, systems and machinery through more than 500 contracts with equipment vendors.

All equipment arriving in South Korea will be certified by LR to agreed codes and standards.

Once construction is completed, the vessel will be towed to Mozambique, with LR representatives in attendance to witness hookup of the mooring system and to survey commissioning of the topsides plant on station.

Site surveyors will then confirm that the unit is installed and commissioned in accordance with its rules and with the industry codes and standards that it is designed to.
