PORTLETHEN, UKPipetech has introduced an active caisson management service following various projects for North Sea operators.

Caissons are susceptible to damage from fatigue and erosion, which can cause defects and wall failure with an attendant impact on production and safety.

The new solution is a single-sourced range of services that includes inspection, cleaning, coating, and maintenance and repair scheduling. Clients to date include Repsol Sinopec Resources UK, Statoil, Aker BP, and Nexen Petroleum UK.

Eric Doyle, managing director at Pipetech said: “Caissons are…highly at risk from erosion defects and damage, particularly around the sea surface area…

“We have several years experience in caisson cleaning so understand the value a proactive integrity management plan can offer.”

According to the company, caisson failures have been the cause of numerous shutdowns, with structural failures leading to dropped objects. Clamp repairs can be time consuming, expensive and in many cases, result in defects occurring in new areas on the caisson.

The new service addresses wall thickness and defect issues with integrity in mind, one aim being to reduce the likelihood of failure.
