MELBOURNE, Australia – Esso Australia plans to drill two exploration wells in mid-year on the VIC/P70 block, 90 km (56 mi) off the East Gippsland Victorian coast.

According to the company’s website, the wells will target the Baldfish and Hairtail prospects, with the program expected to last around 60 days.

The wells will determine the extent of any gas reserves and the potential for a subsequent development. If successful, this could add much needed new gas supplies, the company said, to offset declining production in its existingBass Strait fields which have been producing for more than 40 years.
