A sailaway ceremony for the Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit has taken place at the Wison shipyard in China, according to a recent Eni press release.

The vessel will increase production by 2.4 MMt/year at the Eni-led Congo LNG development in the Marine XII concession offshore the Republic of Congo.

It measures 376 m long and 60 m, and it will be moored in 35 m of water offshore Republic of Congo, forming the centerpiece of Phase 2 of Congo. According to Eni, it should be ready to start operations by the end of the year.

The vessel will be able to process gas from multiple offshore fields, with onboard technologies designed to reduce its carbon emissions.

Conception of the design and the construction that followed took 33 months from contract award, representing a record for time-to-market in the sector, Eni claimed.

The refurbished floating production and compression unit—formerly the Scarabeo 5 drilling rig—will depart Shanghai in the next few days. Once in operation at the offshore location, it will send processed gas to the Nguya.

In the meantime, installation continues of the Phase 2 project’s associated subsea infrastructure.

Tango FLNG (0.6 MMt/year), the first phase of Congo LNG, started production in December 2023 and has so far exported 12 cargoes.
