AiP granted for Samsung’s deepwater FLNG

ABS has granted Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) approval in principle (AiP) for its design of a multi-purpose LNG floating facility for deepwater, known as MLF-O.

The system is intended to operate in deepwater areas and withstand wave heights of 9 m. ABS conducted design reviews based on class and statutory requirements.

According to SHI, the design minimizes internal shock from sloshing through having the cargo hold configured in two rows.

By standardizing the cargo hold and hull, the company adds, capacity could be raised from 180,000 to 220,000 cu m.

Previously SHI developed the multi-purpose LNG floater-nearshore (MLF-N) in 2023 for coastal areas with an average wave height of 2 m or less.

Both concepts are aimed at gas field development projects.
