SAN RAMOND, California -- Chevron has deployed Transocean’s ultra deepwater drillship Discoverer Inspiration in the US Gulf of Mexico, under a five-year contract.
The rig is designed to drills wells in up 12,000 ft (3,650 m) of water to 40,000 ft (12,200 m) TD. It has dual-activity drilling capacity, an enhanced top drive, a high-pressure mud system, and variable deckload of more than 20,000 metric tons.
Chevron says the rig is expected to reduce drilling cost by 5-15% over conventional single-activity rigs, depending on reservoir depth and complexity.
The operator intends to use the rig to drill deepwater exploration wells in the US GoM, and then to develop existing discoveries such as Jack, St. Malo, and Buckskin.
