WASHINGTON, D.C. – The US Coast Guard has established additional risk-based safety oversight for foreign-flagged MODUs operating on the US continental shelf.
The new procedure allows for more frequent examinations of those MODUs determined to have the highest risk based on accident history, past discrepancies, flag state performance, and classification society performance, says the Coast Guard.
All MODUs operating in the United States are subject to annual examinations to verify compliance with area laws and international conventions. If that exam finds “questionable equipment, systems, or crew competency issues” the USCG can expand its investigation to determine whether a deficiency exists, and that may require additional tests, inspections, or crew drills.
The Coast Guard can curtail vessel operations until the deficiencies are corrected.
