SCA to manage cable transport, carousel delivery for Caspian energy project

Five cable transport carousels loaded aboard a transport vessel will support subsea cable delivery for an offshore energy project in the Caspian region. 

Saipem Contracting Netherlands has commissioned Subsea Cable Assets (SCA) to support an unnamed energy project in the Caspian region.

The $20-million award, covering engineering, equipment fabrication, installation and operation, demobilization and reinstatement, includes delivery of five 1,100-t capacity cable transport carousels and associated cable handling equipment.

SCA will mobilize the cable spooling equipment onto a purpose-built transport vessel for load out at JDR Cable Systems in the UK.

The laden cable carousels will then sail to southeastern Europe for onward transfer, via self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), onto smaller transport barges and into the Caspian region.

SCA will oversee the full program from equipment supply through onsite deployment.

Manufacturing of the cable carousels and related equipment is progressing at SCA’s Dubai site, with shipment to Europe planned by the end of this year.

The project highlights the logistical challenges of transporting large subsea cable infrastructure into the landlocked Caspian basin, where equipment often requires multiple transport modes and complex transshipment operations to reach offshore developments.
