ABERDEEN, UK – Billed as the next generation autonomous underwater vehicle, the Munin is on show by Kongsberg Maritime’s Subsea Division at Offshore Europe in Aberdeen.

The Munin is designed to collect high resolution sonar data geo-referenced by a survey grade positioning system in a compact design that allows easier launch and recovery, says Kongsberg.

Munin can accept extra batteries to extend operational scope for missions lasting up to 24 hr at water depths to 1,500 m (4,920 ft). The AUV weighs less than 300 kg (661 lb) in air, its 34-cm (1 ft) diameter and length between 3 and 4 m (10-13 ft) depending on configuration.

The user configurable vehicle can carry a variety of payloads with a selection of communication and navigation equipment.

“The offshore survey industry has long sought a highly capable tool that can be operated from smaller vessels,” comments Geir Schmidt, vice president AUV, Kongsberg Maritime.
