ABERDEEN, UK – Maritime Developments (MDL) has completed a decommissioning program supporting Ocean Installer on Vår Energi’s Balder X project in the Norwegian North Sea.

MDL provided SURF equipment, a project engineering team, and offshore personnel to help recover risers and umbilicals on the Jotun A FPSO, which recently sailed to Stavanger for refurbishment as part of the redevelopment.

The company performed the work in two stages in 4Q 2019 and 2Q 2020, using two MDL horizontal spreads on board the Olympic Challenger and Viking Neptun, respectively.

For last year’ winter campaign, an MDL 4-track pipelay tensioner and overboarding chute were deployed to recover the flexibles for cutting on board into 12-m (39-ft) sections.

This spring’s campaign involved use of the MDL horizontal lay system with 4-track tensioner to recover various products in 2- and 4- track mode. These were then cut into sections for disposal during the recovery operations.

The equipment helped Ocean Installer to safely remove around 130 buoyancy modules during recovery to deck via the integrated runway beams, using certified air hoists instead of the vessel crane.
