Noble nets drilling contracts offshore Uruguay, Peru with Apache, Occidental

Both programs will feature the first exploration wells in the awarded frontier acreage.

Why this news matters:

  • Noble’s new contracts with Apache and Occidental signal continued exploration and drilling interest in emerging and underexplored offshore basins in South America, particularly offshore Uruguay and Peru.

  • The awards help sustain offshore rig demand and utilization in a market where operators are selectively advancing exploration programs to identify new hydrocarbon resources.

  • Additional drilling activity offshore Uruguay could further test the basin’s exploration potential following recent industry interest, while work offshore Peru supports ongoing efforts to unlock new regional energy supplies.

Noble Corp. has secured new contracts for four of its drillships and two jackup rigs offshore South America, West Africa and Norway.

In Uruguay, the Noble BlackHawk will drill one well for Apache Corp. on Block OFF-6, which the company operates in partnership with Eni. The 50-day program is due to start in fourth-quarter 2027. Noble’s $25-million contract excludes additional fees for mobilization and demobilization.

Offshore Peru, Noble Globetrotter will drill two wells for Occidental, with operations currently expected to begin in second-quarter 2027, at a dayrate of $400,000.

Occidental subsidiary Anadarko Peru operates offshore Block Z-61, Block Z-62 and Block Z-63 in the northern Trujillo Basin. The location for the well is reportedly in Block Z-62 and follows an extensive 3D seismic acquisition campaign over the acreage in 2024.

Upon completion of the well, Noble Globetrotter is due to start a contract for TotalEnergies in West Africa under a three-year Capacity Reservation Agreement for light well intervention services. This provides a minimum commitment of 150 days per year, with the first call-off service order anticipated offshore Angola in third-quarter/fourth-quarter 2027.

Noble also has a new four-well contract from TotalEnergies offshore Nigeria for the Noble BlackRhino. Operations are due to start in the current quarter, with an estimated duration of 150 days, plus six priced option wells.

Finally, Tullow Oil will take the Noble Faye Kozack drillship on a five-well contract for a 250-day program offshore Ghana, set to begin in mid-2027. Terms include five priced option wells.

Offshore Norway, the Noble Interceptor jackup rig should start work next summer on a newly awarded contract for DNO, with an anticipated duration of 50-90 days. The rig will then transfer to the Ekofisk Field in the North Sea for a long-term P&A program for ConocoPhillips, which could last 670 days.

Finally, ORLEN will take the Noble Intrepid jackup rig on a one-well contract next summer, which could last between 40 and 60 days.

Backlog stands at $6.7 billion

Noble’s latest results statement revealed an overall contracts backlog of $6.7 billion as of Oct. 26, not including mobilization and demobilization revenue.

The new fixtures included dayrates for Tier-1 drillships ranging between the mid-$400,000s and $500,000, and dayrates for the jackups between $230,000 and $300,000.

“Forward contract coverage and dayrate trends for both deepwater and ultra-harsh environment jackups continue to methodically improve, despite limited apparent demand tailwinds arising from higher oil prices during 2026 thus far," President and CEO Robert W. Eifler said. We continue to build backlog that supports an expected meaningful inflection in fleet utilization and cash flow starting H2 2027, with already approximately 20% more contracted capacity in our fleet in H2 2027 compared to H1 2027.”
