LONDON – The Norwegian Maritime Authority has approved Lloyd’s Register (LR) to class construction of mobile units working on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).

This follows a change to thePetroleum Safety Authority’s (PSA) framework HSE regulations, which now allow mobile units employed in petroleum activities on the shelf to be designed in compliance with relevant maritime requirements.

LR can now undertake verification services for mobile drilling, well-intervention, and multi-purpose use rigs/vessels and certain types of mobile production, allowing it to extend its collaboration with existing international clients in the NCS area and potential customers.

Recently LR undertook a study with the PSA to assess the risk associated with different vessel operations in the Norwegian offshore sector. The conclusion was that some of the activities could potentially result in serious accidents with fatalities and/or injuries, or material damage with substantial economic losses.
