Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Samsung Heavy Industries approval in principle (AiP) for the new SnapWind Float floating offshore wind turbine design.

The system, LR announced Sept. 12 from the Gastech event in Milan, is targeted at floating wind projects in deeper waters and also for higher-capacity offshore wind developments worldwide.

The construction process, LR added, has been optimized for floating offshore wind farm developments in regions where resources, such as skilled work teams, heavy lifting equipment and sufficient workspace, are limited.

Samsung’s engineering team performed the concept and basic design, with LR conducting a review, to verify the feasibility and safety of the design ahead of potential commercial deployments.
